Pocahontas Virginia

Message From the Mayor

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting our web site and welcoming you to the Town of Pocahontas. This web site was designed to not only provide information but to also give you a little flavor of our unique and delightful town.

The Pocahontas Town Council, in its legislative role, adopts all ordinances, resolutions, and general long and short term policies for the Town.  The Town Council is responsible for setting the tax and water user rates, capital improvement projects, zoning decisions and adopts the annual operating budget.  The Town Council meets on the third Monday of every month at 7:00 pm.  The Town of Pocahontas is organized under a Council-Manager form of government.  The Mayor is elected for a two year term, who also serves as the Town Manager.  The Town Council is elected for the same two year term.

Together we are always working to make our Town better.  The challenge is to manage and embrace our opportunities while preserving our rich coal heritage with in a small town atmosphere.  As we look for ways to grow, we will continue to promote our annual traditions such as the Indian Run, Exhibition Mine & Museum opening, Coal Miners’ Reunion, 4th of July Celebration, Haunted Coal Mine and our Coal Camp Christmas.
Our events are managed by our volunteers to whom we are truly grateful.

Recently we have had a series of strategic visioning meetings with our Community.  From our Community’s input, we have put together a master plan for our Town.  It is our intentions to embrace the ATV/multi-use trail industry to further aid in our economic development initiatives.  We invite everyone to convey feedback, input and comments.

The Town of Pocahontas is proud of our coal mining heritage.  Our community is built on friends, family, and small town charm.  We have been blessed with history, warm climate, and an abundance of natural beauty.  We are a close-knit community which understands the need to provide our friends and neighbors with a friendly, clean and safe place to call home.  Couple that with affordable housing, one of the lowest cost of living indexes in the area, and you see why I am excited about what the future holds!

Whether you are a visitor passing through for the day or a life long resident, we welcome you and if we can be of service please contact us. We hope you enjoy our town as much as we do!

Remember:  Once an Indian, Always an Indian!
